File Explorer Reference Help

This page describes the menus of File Explorer. For an overview of its usage go to Using File Explorer.

File Menu

New Folder

Create a new folder in the current one

New Bookmark

Bookmark a location in VOSpace or local disk. The bookmark will appear in the top left panel.

View

(Available when a file has been selected): view the file in the default browser

Execute Task

Download

(Available when one or more VOSpace files have been selected): Download file(s) from VOSpace to local machine: select the folder where you want the file(s) saved.

Upload

(Available when one or more files on local disk have been selected): Upload file(s) from local machine to VOSpace: select the VOSpace folder where you want the file(s) saved.

Close Window

Close File Explorer

Rename

Rename the selected file or folder

Duplicate

Duplicate the selected file(s) or folder(s)

Delete

Delete the selected file(s) or folder(s)

Bookmark this folder

(Once inside a folder in VOSpace or local disk - i.e. double click on the folder you want to bookmark): bookmark the folder.

Edit Bookmark

Edit bookmark properties

Delete Bookmark

Remove the selected bookmark from list

Login / Logout

Exit

Exits File Explorer and VODesktop.

Edit Menu

Cut, Copy, Paste, Select All, Select None

Standard edit functions to operate on files / folders in VOSpace or local disk.

Preferences

Reset configuration

Reset the VODesktop configuration settings to the default values.

Clear cache

Removes all cache data, e.g. cached registry entries.

View Menu

Refresh

Refresh view of the current folder

Stop

Halt the refreshing of current folder

as Icons

Display folder items using icons (default)

as List

Display folder items using icons as a list (lists date modified, size type)

Go Menu

Back

Forward

Enclosing folder

Go to parent folder

Home

Go to home directory on local disk

Workspace

Go to home directory in your VOSpace

Go to Location

Highlights text in the Location box for you to type in a new location to go to

Go to Local Folder

Brings up dialogue for you to select the local folder to go to

The Tool-Bar

The following is a summary of the buttons on the File Explorer tool-bar.

- Back: see folders you have previously viewed.

- Forward: see child folders you have previously viewed.

- Up: navigate to the parent of the current folder.

- Displays the current location. New locations can be entered and then the button is pressed to go to the specified location.

- Refreshes the list of files or folders in the current view.

- Bookmarks the current location.

- Create a new folder in the current location.

- Filter the list of files. For example, if "vot" is entered in the text box then only file names containing "vot" are shown. To show all files again, delete all of the text in this text box.
